Healthcare Support Worker

We provide a range of community-based mental health, wellbeing, residential, and recovery services, working alongside people to nurture hope, build resilience, and create new possibilities. Our services are underpinned by recovery principles, person-led practice, and a commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
We are seeking compassionate, energetic, and flexible Casual Mental Health Support Workers to join our team and provide support across one or more of our specialist services.
About the Role
As a Casual Mental Health Support Worker, you will work alongside people experiencing mental health challenges, supporting them to achieve their goals, strengthen their wellbeing, and participate fully in their communities. You may be required to work across:
He Kākano Ora - Perinatal Mental Health Service: Supporting new parents during pregnancy and the first year after birth who are experiencing mental health challenges. This service provides both community-based and respite support in a nurturing, family-focused environment.
Integrated Practice Teams (IPT): Working within multi-disciplinary community mental health teams to support people in their recovery journey through practical assistance, community engagement, wellbeing planning, and goal achievement. WALSH Trust's community services are strengths-based and tailored to individual needs.
Te Whare Rata: Supporting older adults accessing short-term mental health recovery and respite services in a residential setting, helping maintain independence, wellbeing, and quality of life.
Key Responsibilities
- Build positive, respectful, and recovery-focused relationships with people accessing our services.
- Support people to identify and achieve their personal wellbeing goals.
- Assist with daily living skills, community participation, appointments, and social connection.
- Provide practical and emotional support in accordance with individual support plans.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation.
- Work collaboratively with clinical teams, whānau, and community agencies.
- Promote wellbeing, independence, resilience, and hope.
- Uphold safe practice and organisational policies at all times.
- Contribute to a positive team culture aligned with WALSH Trust values.
About You
We are looking for someone who:
- Has a genuine passion for supporting people experiencing mental health challenges.
- Demonstrates empathy, patience, and non-judgemental communication.
- Understands recovery-oriented and strengths-based practice.
- Is culturally responsive and committed to working in partnership with Māori and diverse communities.
- Can work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Is flexible and available to work casual shifts, including weekends and public holidays when required.
- Has excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
Preferred Experience and Qualifications
- Experience working in mental health, addiction, community support, disability, aged care, healthcare, social services, or a related field.
- Qualification in Mental Health, Health and Wellbeing, Psychology, Social Work, Nursing, Human Services, or a related discipline is desirable but not essential.
- A Level 4 New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (or willingness to work towards one) would be advantageous.
- Current Full New Zealand Driver Licence.
- Eligibility to work in New Zealand.
